Newspapers, Blogs, Leaks And The Real Story

"Eyeonridgely" is right with the comment below (Contract Controversy Continued - 9/14 post) that the stories in the papers miss the main point. First, this isn't about a "leak" because there wasn't one. This blog brought to light what had been previously presented at the Commissioners' public workshop. This isn't called "leaking" but publicity. Publicity has, in this case, stopped what was about to quietly be passed. We are not out of the woods yet but heading in a better direction.

The main issue that the paper missed is that the proposed contract turns the town Charter on its head by putting the unelected and non-resident Town Manager in a stronger position than our elected and resident Commissioners. They are currently his boss and that arrangement should not change. The issues of the car and residency are important and clearly have widespread support. However, in terms of potential damage to the town, ignoring the Charter and the ordinance which created the position of Town Manager would inflict far more damage on Ridgely.

Hey it's me, Travis. Very interesting blog. I read the article in yesterday's paper, but it made the entire issue just seem to be about where Mangini should live. But I think your blog clears it up some.

People need to know that one statement in the article is totally wrong...that the discussion came up because of a "leak." The discussion came up because it has continually been coming up for the past 2 1/2 years, since the Commissioners aren't making the Town Manager live up to his contract.

There was MUCH discussion of the issue at this past budget time, about no raise unless he moves, taking away his car, even possibly letting him go. This is when the Commissioners decided to review his contract, and the T.M. took the opportunity to submit a "wish list." A pretty bold move on his part, asking for more, when he hasnt' even given us the minimum!!!

This is, as it well should be, a hot topic. Some people seem to think that if the T.M. is doing a good job, we should overlook him not moving to Ridgely. But not moving shows his character, which would seem to be not be very trustworthy. Do we want a T.M. that isn't trustworthy? I THINK MOST WOULD SAY NOT!!!

Yes, he is now RENTING just outside the town limits, but how often is he actually staying there? He is still driving a town car and we are paying for his gas...or is it just a sham to get everyone off his back? Have the Commissioners actually even seen a lease?

I would hope the Commissioners would tighten up his current contract, not give him a new contract with who know what kind of "wish list" items he has asked for.
